The concept for The Employment & Career Channel (TECC) began in 1988 as a marketing strategy for accessing new cable television subscribers. TECC’s CEO and Founder Broderick Byers, discovered through marketing research that working-class customers in Washington D.C. were more willing to subscribe to cable services if the basic channel package included a channel showing job listings. Strong customer interest in the concept persuaded him to try to develop The Employment Channel, a 24/7 cable channel. The initial vision of a cable channel has since morphed into a highly viable online video network.
Mr. Broderick Byers is a veteran of the cable industry. His experience covers all aspects of marketing of cable television and similar services. His expertise includes: subscriber acquistion & retention, advertising sales, research, P/R, operations, and urban / multi-cultural marketing. His employers have included TCI, Time-Warner - NYC, Connection Cable TV (Newark, NJ), UA-Columbia, and Syracuse Cablevision and BET Holdings.
It was while at BET Holdings that Broderick met Bob Johnson, then owner of the Washington, DC cable system, District Cablevision and Chairman of Black Entertainment Television (BET). Broderick’s access to a pioneering African-American man like Johnson, inspired him to attempt to launch a channel – organically and with investment dollars.
Mr. Byers is a founding member of National Association of Minorities in Cable (NAMIC) and served as the first President of NAMIC's New York Chapter. Mr. Byers has served on the New York City Mayor's advisory board for New Media initiatives, serves on the Board of Directors for the Greater Harlem Nursing Home and is the President of the New York Chapter of the National Black Chamber of Commerce.
